2020 SEASON CANCELLED
PLEASE READ MESSAGE BELOW
LYB Families,This morning, I prepared a very different email to send out in the next couple of days, detailing our plan to begin practicing in June and our much anticipated, modified 2020 Schedule that our Westside Youth Baseball Board (WSYB) has been diligently working on the last several weeks.
I am more than disappointed to announce that the most recent "Phase III" update from Oregon Governor Kate Brown late this morning has ended those plans --
"Phase III concerns high-risk, large gatherings such as concerts, conventions, festivals, and live audience sports. Brown reminds the public, however, that these gatherings will not be possible until a reliable treatment or prevention is available. Due to this, all large gatherings should be cancelled or significantly modified through at least September.”
The WSYB Board had no choice but to cancel our 2020 season, effective immediately. On that note, I would like to thank the WSYB Board members and all of their efforts, working at all levels, on our behalf, trying to get us on the baseball field this season. I want to thank each one of our LYB Board members who have spent lots of hours preparing for this baseball season ( winter work outs, rosters, insurance, uniforms and getting the field prepared for a modified season).
Our Treasurer will start working on refunds next week and it could take a couple of weeks For all our competitive teams we had gathered all of our costs to determine what we are able to refund back at last month board meeting so we could act if the news came out.. A majority of our expenditures are made on the front-end of our season. The goal is to refund you as much as possible while being fair to all.
This also includes limiting calls and emails requesting refunds as the answer will be the same - "Please be patient as we work through this process to ensure fairness for all our families." This is uncharted territory for us, and we are all volunteers. Some of our vendors are still closed due to the pandemic. You get the point. Thanks in advance for your understanding!
Fall sports (in general) are in question right now. We will continue to plan on having a Fall Ball season, or more. Stay tuned.
Sports is such a big part of our lives.... It will be very hard for all of us to share the news with our players. Our kids need some normalcy. They need to hang out with their friends, compete, fight over sunflower seeds, and be part of a team. Our challenge as parents will be to remain positive and find other ways to make memories this Summer.
As you are aware the governor made the decision to close in-person learning for all Oregon schools thru the remainder of the school year. Immediately afterwards the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) canceled all remaining Spring activities and state championships. Current OSAA policies prohibit the use of school facilities and coaches from organizing/directing practices.
Unfortunately, the LYB board had to make the decision to cancel our T-ball and Rookie season this year. This was a difficult decision, and one that is being made across youth sports right now.
There are new Catcher Gear and batting helmet requirements for all JBO (3rd - 8th grade) players. All catchers must wear NOCSAE standard catcher's head and face protection with full ear and throat protection, body/chest protector that meets the NOCSAE standard (effective Jan 1, 2021), protector cup and baseball protective shin guards during warm-ups and during games in all leagues. Catchers will follow all high school rules for equipment.
Liberty Youth Baseball (LYB) is the youth baseball program in Hillsboro, Oregon. We offer recreational and competitive spring leagues for kids ages 5 through 14, as well as a fall league. We are a volunteer-based organization, and a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit.
